Personal Development Planning using 3Ps®
The 3Ps® development tool can be used for:
- Supporting a Personal Development Plan (PDP)
The 3Ps® complements and supports an existing personal development plan (PDP) or it can act as the skeleton for a new personal development plan (PDP).
It can sometimes be difficult for individuals to identify where they can improve and develop. The 3Ps® has been designed to highlight 4 areas to consider for improvement. This allows individuals to think about specific areas of work instead of the general labels associated with personal development.
The 3Ps® can also be used regularly to assess the improvements made by individuals and to identify further new areas of development.
- Understanding the dynamics of an existing team
In the case of an existing team, the 3Ps® highlights areas for improving performance in the team. For example if the members of the team approach things in the same way, because they share the same preference, they may overlook certain aspects of performance and/or communication.
Alternatively if the team shares a wide variety of preferences the 3Ps® highlights areas where changes in individual approaches and/or behaviours will make an impact to improve internal communication and therefore team performance.
- Building a new team (e.g. project team)
With a project team coming together, there is always a possibility that the chosen group of people may not work well as a team. The 3Ps® outlines potential areas of weakness within the project team in terms of performance and communication before the newly formed team starts working together.
It also helps individuals to understand the preferences of the other team members so they understand what each individual should focus on so that the project team is performing well together.
- Supporting an appraisal system
During an appraisal it’s often difficult for individuals to think about what their objectives for the coming period are going to be – whether it’s annual or quarterly goal-setting. The 3Ps® can support individuals and managers by allowing them to explore ways for the individual to develop and improve their performance by highlighting areas of development. The 3Ps® is used as a catalyst to draw out objectives for personal development.
- Providing information in the recruitment process
The 3Ps® can provide a detailed understanding of the communication preferences of an individual who’s applying for a job which can give an indication of the candidate’s suitability for the role.
It will also give an indication of the culture the candidate is coming from and their behaviour with regards to key performance indicators.
